VFW Post 1533 invites San Antonio-area middle school students to participate in the annual VFW Patriot’s Pen essay competition. Patriot’s Pen provides students with an opportunity to reflect on America, its history, and their experiences in American society—and to express their ideas in their own words.
Theme: "What a Veteran Taught Me About America.” Think about a veteran you know. What has that veteran taught you about America, service, sacrifice, citizenship or what it means to be an American?
⏰ Don't miss the deadline: October 31, 2026 | Applications must be submitted by the deadline. Don’t wait until the last minute.
Who can enter? Patriot’s Pen is open to students in grades 6, 7, and 8 who are enrolled in:
- Public school
- Private school
- Parochial school
- Home study program
How to enter in three easy steps:
1. Write your original essay: Prepare an original 300–400 word essay responding to the 2026–2027 theme. Your essay must be your own original work. The use of AI is strictly prohibited.
3. Submit your application online: Applications will only be accepted via ScholarsApp.com
